Devanāgarī - The Art of Sanskrit
Deva in Sanskrit mean “shining” or “shining ones”. It’s the name Vedic tradition gives to the cosmic powers that we translate at gods and goddesses. Devanāgari, the Sanskrit alphabet, is literally translated as “city of the Gods” because the forms are said to encase the various sacred vibratory threads of the energy of creation.
The Magic
When we are chanting in Sanskrit we are activating these energies through sound, however, we can also work with them without vocalizing.
The same sacred energies activate when we practice the art of writing them.
Each letter in the Sanskrit alphabet is a mantra in itself.
Likhita japa is the meditation of mantra writing. As you focus on the shape of writing each letter you are activating the energy of the mantra to come alive.
You can write the same mantra repeatedly in a mantra journal and keep it anywhere you would like the the magic of that mantra to amplify. Keeping it with you, putting it under your pillow to absorb the energy while you sleep, or setting it in a place in your home you wish to cultivate that energy are a few ways this practice is used.
You can also write a mantra on a cup or pitcher to continually charge whatever you are drinking with the vibration.
You can also share written mantras with those you love as blessings.
BUT first you have to learn to write the individual letters and how they come together to form words.
As you do this you begin to cultivate a relationship with each letter and invite it’s magic to come alive inside you as it moves through your hand onto the paper.
The Practice
In this class we will:
-explore the shapes and sounds of each letter and practice writing them in a meditative space
-learn how the shapes shift when they are combined with others
-investigate the connection of opening the heart and allowing that energy to find open flow down the arms and out through our hands into what we create.
By the end of the session you will have the ability to continue a likhita japa practice on your own either with the group mantras that we will all be learning, or with a mantra of your choice if there is a specific one that you would like me to teach you.
The Container
Classes will be held at Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth, rainy dates we’ll find a comfortable indoor location. We will meet on Wednesdays at 12:30PM. Start date June 28.
If you have to miss a class or two (because it’s summer and things come up) you will receive a recording, not of class, but of any information you need to continue your practice for the coming week.
