The Awkwardness of Learning to Fly
As many of you know, I love bird watching. The desk that I sit at looks out at a a few different flowering bushes which the neighborhood birds like to hang out in. This gives me an awesome opportunity to watch them up close when they sing, so now I'm learning the language each one speaks.
Three years ago I came home to what I thought was a dead or hurt bird sitting at my front door. My heart instantly broke. Then it started hopping along in a goofy sort of cheerful way and I realized it was a baby cardinal!!! It was so cute, I didn't move and just watched it until it noticed me and hopped away back into the bush.
Every year, the fledgling cardinals have come back, and now word has spread that my porch is safe, because all kinds of fledglings are visiting me now.
One really cool thing, is watching them explore using their wings. They have the intention, they seem to know what they want to do, but actually doing it is a little wonky. They're trying out new ways of moving, a new ways of taking up space, new ways of being in their little bird bodies.
This is what happens when we try to learn something new as well. New neural pathways have to be created to make things smooth. I see this all the time when I'm teaching someone a new harmonium song. The fingers need to practice the new patterns many times in order to become smooth.
This is also true for new habits and even new ways of responding to the people and events in our lives. We can't just decide one day to change the way we've been doing something, or incorporate something we haven't been doing and expect that we will do it perfectly. It takes experimenting and committing to keep trying even if it's really uncomfortable in the beginning.
These are some of the things I support people with in my 1:1 sessions.
It's easy to get down on yourself if you're trying to make a change and it doesn't work right away. It can be helpful to have a neutral witness to reflect the effort you're making as you evolve. Additionally, working with yogic practices such as chanting and pranayama as well as energy healing modalities, can assist shifts on subtle energetic levels and facilitate release of stagnant energy.
