The Possibility of Peace in the Center of Chaos

A few days back, searching for a little nervous system reset, I went to the lighthouse. In the middle of a bright summer day during tourist season, I usually avoid this, but, I was driving by and the ocean called me, in spite of the number of cars in the lot.

I walked along the path until I found spot that, for a brief moment, was empty. I could feel people buzzing around me, stopping for a millisecond to grab at the view or take a picture. I thought about moving on, but the ocean's gentle lapping whispered, “Stay.”

I didn’t have anywhere to rush off to, so I stayed in that spot and allowed myself to just be there. I let go of contemplations, concerns, intentions, my to-do list, and breathed full presence in through every pore on my body.

And because I stayed still;

I saw the daisies gently dancing, being tickled by the soft breeze and a small orange butterfly that landed and unfurled it’s wings as if posing for a photo shoot .

I smiled as a family of ducks floated into view, bobbing and diving almost like bathtub toys being played with by an invisible hand.

I heard a jovial band of tourists making plans for the day and a German couple having an intimate conversation.

All kinds of things passed through my awareness. Strands of wheat- like grass ~ was it wheat? An Admiral butterfly with its dark wings, the lobster boat making rounds outside the bay, bird calls, the constant momentum of the water brushing against the rocks.

Because I was still, in this sea of moving pieces, I had this overwhelming sensation of being a part of not one thing, but everything. And after a while, that melted into no-thing.

I’m sharing this because it is possible to feel peace in the middle of chaos and it is possible understand yourself, not as an individual, but as a part of the whole.

A long time ago, someone wise told me to sit still, get very quiet, and listen. Even when it seems like the most mundane situation, the messages that come through in stillness are worth the wait.
